The flame for Sturman Electronics started long before the
company. Peter Sturman always had an passion for electronics. From an early age he loved to burn the midnight
candle, building his own amplifiers, fitting electronics ignitions
to his and his mates' cars, pulling devices apart to see how they
work and fixing anything from washing machines to cars.
Peter trained as a Mechanical Engineer, later becoming a Draftsman,
then a Procurement Officer at Comsteel.
He took a redundancy package in 1982 and an opening as a service
technician for the Sony distributors in the Illawarra, M&S
Engineering, became available. As Peter wasn't trained as an
Electronics Technician they decided not to employ him, so he had
to become a Sole Trader and work as a contractor where he was only paid for the work
he completed. Sturman Electronics was born.
Peter soon proved M&S Engineering owners wrong. He grew the
business rapidly. His days were spent serving customers and his
nights were spent working on repairs. Unable to keep up with the
workload, in 1985 Peter's wife Noelene left the University, where she worked as a
secretary, and started to help Peter. At this stage Sturman
Electronics became a partnership.
M&S Engineering extended the building in 1988 allowing the business to
expand, which in turn allowed Peter & Noelene to employ 2
apprentices - their
son Michael and a close friend Adam Herald.
In 1990 M&S Engineering lost the Sony agency. Faced with
another tough decision, Peter decided to start a retail outlet which
maintained his belief - Service. They moved to Unanderra where
they created a showroom at the front and a workshop at the rear. Another
family member also joined at this time - Alex Sturman. The stage
was set, the little Service Centre became a company - Sturman Electronics Pty
Ltd.
Within 3 years they outgrew the Unanderra premises and moved to their current
location in Wollongong. This location provided a bigger sales
floor while maintaining the workshop at the rear. After 5
years they expanded again, adding extra sound lounges, a bigger product
range and creating an enjoyable atmosphere for their customers.
Not only did they expand their showroom, they also expanded their staff in sales, administration and
installation.
They now have over 20 staff and Peter, Noelene, Michael and Adam are
still at the company.
They are very proud of their history and they are also proud of the
reputation they have built. But more importantly they have enjoyed all
the friendships they have built up over the years. Wollongong is a
great place to live and they are proud to be a part of it.
