Pre-Wiring Your New Home

The advancement of technology in the past years has resulted in people having rising expectations with their modern conveniences.  What was once considered gadgets for the geeks or the technology enthusiast is slowly working it's way in and becoming a standard in the home.  The most noteworthy advancements in the last few years include:

   *  Full control of music throughout the house

   *  Full control of video throughout the house

   *  Control of lights, curtains and doors from a central location

   *  Increased internet and network connectivity of A/V devices, e.g.:

        -  Some PVRs can now be remote controlled over the internet

        -  The ability to stream photos and music over your network

        -  The ability to stream internet content (such as YouTube) over your network

    *  The iPod as part of your A/V entertainment system

Builders of new homes and in some cases home renovators are in an excellent position because, even though it is possible to retrofit cables, it is much easier (and cheaper for the home owner) to run these cables during construction.  This is called a Pre-wire.

Pre-wiring usually occurs in the building stage after the framework has been erected and the benefits include:

    *  Somewhat future-proofing your house

    *  All wiring is hidden

    *  It may be impossible to run cables between 2 points after construction

Although wireless may be an option at a later stage,  these wireless solutions cannot be used for every application.  In short, the future is not wireless.  Read our article on Wireless Woes to learn about pitfalls of wireless devices.

Pre-wiring a home does not just involve running one type of cable.  In most cases it involves running several types of cables, including:

    *  Speaker

    *  Video

    *  Coaxial

    *  Data

Sturman Electronics can take care of all your pre-wiring needs.  Come in and talk to our experienced system designers once your plans have been approved and let us show you what is possible.
